What is Sankt Hans?
In Denmark, the solstice is tied to the feast of Saint John the Baptist, known in Denmark as Sankt Hans (“Hans” being the diminutive for Johannes, or John), who was supposedly born on June 24th.
At Sankt Hans we always have a big bonfire. In the old days, people affixed a straw witch to the top of the fire as a way to remember the witch burning of the 16th and 17th centuries. When the witch was burnt, she would fly all the way to Bloksbjerg in Germany, where a witch-gathering was believed to be held. It's kind of a controversial ritual.
What to bring to the event
- Please dress according to the weather.
- BYO chairs, picnic table, drinkware, picnic rug, flashlights and your party spirit!
- We appreciate if you bring your own reusable drinkware, so we can reduce waste.
